Room 4 – Primary 6

Room 4

Numeracy and Maths

Term 3:

Pupils have been perfecting their times tables to ensure that they are confidently able to tackle multiplication and division work, which has been a focus this term. Mental Maths has also been a target where pupils are actively involved in games which are timed, thus ensuring improvement in mental agility. Place Value is consistently reinforced throughout their daily routine. Children have also covered aspects of 24 hour time. There will also be a major focus on fractions, decimals and percentages, with some groups tackling algebra, to enhance their understanding of maths. They say they are looking forward to the challenges this term will bring.

Term 4:

Pupils will also participate in a range of measuring activities both in and out with the classroom environment.  This will involve conversion of units of measure and will be linked to fraction work.  Pupils will also learn about probability and learn to display a wide variety of information linked to topic work in a variety of graphs and charts.  They will also consolidate their understanding of 3D shape and undertake a variety of Holistic assessments, demonstrating their ability to transfer skills in a variety of word problems.  They will continue to enjoy the regular Big Maths’ assessments on a Friday, attempting to beat their previous scores.  They will also continue to use Talk it Solve it, as a resource to think outside the box and solve specific maths problems.

Literacy and English

Children have been reading a variety of challenging books from Literacy World in each of their groups. These have included some classics like Charles Dickens’, “A Christmas Carol”, and short stories linked to W.W.2. Children have continued to use summarising and predicting strategies before and after the reading process and have also been involved in activities using the strategy of determining importance of key events from texts read. We have been reading extracts from our class novel “The Desperate Journey”, which has provided the children with a valuable insight into the Highland Clearances. Homework has a clear focus on the improvement of spelling, punctuation and grammar skills. This is being extended in the classroom with writing and literacy lessons on imaginative and report writing. Children will continue with group reading books and SRA, which motivates and challenges their comprehension skills.

Term 4:

Children will also continue to develop their understanding of punctuation and grammar in all areas of their written work.  They will be involved in persuasive writing and report writing linked to their topic on democratic and communist ruled countries. Human Rights will play a big part in talking and listening sessions, based on current affairs involving North Korea and learning from these discussions will feed into writing tasks within the class. Reading will continue with Literacy World, with pupils engaging in the reading process through a variety of genres.

Health and Wellbeing

Last term all of Room 4 focused on healthy eating, designing their own healthy eating menu by using the well-known food groups as a key focus. They worked with our student Miss Mooney to create healthy snacks, from ideas discussed in class. All children enjoyed the food preparation and general hygiene, we would expect to follow when cooking. Some children were lucky enough to dig up our potatoes and create a healthy soup dish, with all the fresh ingredients.  This term pupils will benefit from job talks from individuals involved in differing work places, during our focus on World of Work. Gymnastics and Tennis will be a focus in our P.E sessions in term 3.

Term 4:

Pupils will be involved in athletics and orienteering activities, to promote health and wellbeing. They will continue to focus on social and emotional health, through circle-time discussions.  They look forward to getting outside for many health activities.

Social Studies/Interdisciplinary Learning

Children have had a major focus on the Highland Clearances and the forced eviction of Scottish inhabitants of the Highlands of Scotland, beginning in the late 18th century.  They have written reports on the clan system and studied the general way of life in the Scottish Highlands, during this period.  Pupils have researched their own tartan and have produced some wonderful pastel drawing linked to this topic. The study of extracts from the “Desperate Journey”, added depth and substance, to all learning in class. In term 3, children will focus on the geographical features of Scotland and will get a chance to showcase their understanding of the Scottish landscape and the clearances.

Term 4:

Pupils will compare and contrast a democratic society with a communist society. They previously discussed what country they would like to learn about.  As a result of this, North Korea, which is currently under public scrutiny in the news, was the most desired country they wished to find out more about.  They will use ICT packages such as SWAY and Serif to create a presentation on democracy/communism.  They will look at the electoral process and also take a trip to the Scottish Parliament for a tour, to enhance their understanding of our own country’s democratic values.
