Room 3 – Primary 4/5

Room 3

Maths and Numeracy

Within numeracy, we have been focusing on factors, multiples and prime numbers. We have been working successfully on this area and are showing excellent progress. We are currently working on fractions through revision of our existing knowledge and building on this to create challenge. We have been working on finding half, quarter, third, fifth and eighth of a range of numbers, exploring mixed number fractions and are about to engage in equivalence. We will be moving on to decimals and percentages towards the end of the term.

At the beginning of every numeracy/maths lesson we will engage with Big Maths activities to develop our numeracy skills. We have been focusing on counting in multiples, coin and smile multiplication and have touched on doubling and halving. We continue to reinforce the importance of learning the time tables and then we regularly participate in active games such as, Around the World in order to develop our quick reaction times for each answer. In practical maths we have been engaging in lessons focusing on the concept of time, this is a tricky area however, we appear to be coping well and are eager to make progress.

Literacy and English

We are continuing to engage in spelling activities and learning new strategies and rules to help us improve our spelling in order to transfer this into our everyday writing. We are working successfully on our reading and comprehension skills in class and have time to engage in personal reading to improve our fluency. Our reading strategies are being explored and we are getting more and more confident with these, this term we are focusing on inference and connecting.

We are focusing on imaginative writing this term through the use of Writer’s Craft based activities. The writers craft resources help us to think about sentence structure, punctuation, spelling and the fluidity of our writing, as this is something we identified as our PLP target to focus on and improve.

Health and Wellbeing

In Health and Wellbeing we have previously engaged in food and health lessons where we discussed the importance of a balanced diet, understanding the ‘eat well plate’ and the importance of food hygiene. We had class discussions around where different foods came from and what countries produce certain types of foods. We also finished this unit by making our own Christmas pudding cookies considering safety and hygiene throughout, they were delicious!

Currently, we have learning about the world of work. This has been enjoyable for us and we have and continue to engage in a range of interesting activities. We can successfully list our own skills and qualities, identify particular skills needed for particular job roles, and engage in role play learning focusing on interviews. We will be moving on to discussing what skills we have, what we would like to improve on and how we can do this as well as looking at the positive and negative impacts of particular job roles.

Social Studies/Interdisciplinary Learning

For our class topic we were learning about endangered animals in Scotland. This was an extremely engaging topic and very interesting for us. We were able to look at the causes of why animals are becoming endangered and give examples of how we could protect against these areas. We spent a lot of time outdoors recording local wildlife and used natural resources to create mini habitats for an animal of our choice. We also focused on pollution and learned amazing facts about how long particular materials can take to decompose in the ocean, and how we could help. In Room 3, we are a very caring class and from finding out about how we could help animals it was decided we would raise money for the SSPCA through a range of fundraising activities, we raised £180.00!

We will now be moving on to our topic of Weather, this topic allows for a breadth of learning to take place and will be an enjoyable topic for the us. Weather is an area which can be incorporated into all areas of the curriculum and we will be experiencing many exciting and stimulating learning opportunities focusing on this.
