Room 2 – Primary 3

Room 2

What a busy year we are having in Room 2.  Read on to see what we have done and what we will be doing next.

Maths and Numeracy

We are loving Big Maths!  It is good fun meeting all the characters, Pim and Squiggleworth are our favourites so far. We are also enjoying the songs which help us remember our Learn Its. Fridays are the best though because we get to show off our learning during our Learn Its and CLIC challenges.

In Numeracy we have been working on our mental and written addition skills. We have enjoyed this and have all got much more confident solving problems using different strategies. We have also been working on our 10 times table. This table was one of our Big Maths Learn Its. We have all worked really hard on this and can now answer questions really quickly. Next we are moving onto mental and written subtraction. We are looking forward to developing our skills with this.

In Maths we have been learning all about 2D and 3D shapes. We especially had fun creating our shape monsters. These helped us learn the names and properties of all the shapes. We have also learnt about symmetry. We loved being given time to create our own symmetrical pictures and are now experts in pointing out when we see any symmetrical shape. We are now going on to to learn about weight and length. We are looking forward to doing lots of practical fun activities with these.

Literacy and English

In writing we have enjoyed writing personal accounts about our class party, our trip to see Santa at Gouldings, our trip to the Panto and finally Christmas Day. We worked really hard on making sure we put what had happened in the right order and on adding in lots of wow words describing how we felt.

We are now working on letter writing. We have learnt the correct way to set out a letter and an envelope. We are using this skill in real life to invite people in to talk to us about their jobs and to write thank you letters after their visit.

Next we are moving onto Imaginative writing. We are really excited about this as it will be linked to our Pirates topic.

In reading we are really working on our summarising skill. This means we can reduce what we have read into a few sentences. This shows that we have really understood what we have read. We are especially looking forward to using this skill to make our interactive book reviews.

Health and Wellbeing

In Health and Wellbeing we are learning all about the world of work. We have thought about all the people who work in our school and have discussed what we think they do. We are now looking forward to them visiting us so we can find out if what we thought was right.

We have also discussed what jobs we would like to have in the future. We have had to think about what those jobs involve and why we think we would be good at them.

Every week we are also loving our ‘Reasons we Love’ activity. This is where we choose one person in the class and have to say everything we love about them. This makes us feel really special and good about ourselves.

In PE we are working on Gymnastics with Mrs Campbell and Tennis with Mrs Bond.

Interdisciplinary Learning

We started 2018 learning about Scottish mythical creatures. We found out about Kelpies, Selkies, the Wulver and our favourite, the Loch Ness Monster. We especially loved learning our Nessie Song which we performed at the Scottish Celebration.

We have now moved onto our Pirates topic and we are so excited. We have shared everything we know already and have talked about what we want to find out. After just a few lessons we have already found out loads of facts and begun to learn a pirate song in French! We are also enjoying the story of Treasure Island. We will share all of our learning in a showcase we which we can’t wait to do.
