Room 1 – Primary 1/2

Wild About Scotland Bus

Primary 1 & 2 have been extremely busy over the last few months with active learning, Forest School, Christmas Nativity and participating in the Scottish afternoon. You will be amazed at how much we have learned and how confident we have all become! Read on to find out what we have been learning!

Numeracy and Maths

Primary 1 have been busy learning new mathematical language such as ‘add’, ‘subtract’, ‘all together’, ‘total’ and are able to recognise and use symbols such as +, -, =.  Pupils have been working hard on addition and subtraction stories to 5. We are also very good at reciting our doubles to 10 i.e. 1 +1, 2+2, 3+3. Next we will be moving onto addition and subtraction stories to 10.

Primary 2 have been working hard on the addition stories to 20 and have learned different strategies that can be used to help them solve the sums. We enjoy playing interactive mental maths games and computer programmes such as Easimaths to help develop our quick recall of number facts. After the February break we will be learning our subtraction stories to 20.

Literacy and English

Primary 1 are developing their reading skills and are learning to use strategies to help develop a deeper understanding of the text. You can help at home too by encouraging your child to use strategies such as visualising, connecting, questioning and predicting.

Within our phonics we have finished learning all of our single sounds and have now moved onto double sounds like sh, ch, ee and oo. We will be learning to read and spell words that contain these phonemes. We are also learning how to use a connective in a sentence allowing us to write longer sentences.

Primary 2 are continuing to work hard on learning their phonemes. After being introduced to each new phoneme, pupils apply their new learned knowledge to read and write words containing that sound. Within writing, we have been focusing on poetry and even entered the Tunnock’s Poetry Competition. We are very proud of Molly and Rowan who were runners up and received a lovely pencil case filled with goodies.

Within reading we have been introduced to non-fiction and learned about the different features that allow us to access information quickly and easily. One of our targets this term is to be able to identify an adjective and then use it within a sentence.

Health and Wellbeing

We have recently started our second block of Active learning with Miss Dickson, Miss Fleming and Mrs Morrow. Pupils have been involved in a wide range of learning experiences and really enjoyed working with other adults. We have learned about 2D shape, created our own tartan kilts, learned how to use Easimaths on the iPad and even got to make shortbread! Room 1 just love active learning and can’t wait to see what activities are planned for the next few weeks.

Forest School

Room 1 were introduced to Forest School and just loved being in the outdoors! We had the freedom to explore, discover and experience the natural world. As well as opportunities to use our creativity and imagination, we got experience in building fires, cooking outdoors, den building, climbing trees and learned how to use tools safely. Check out our pictures to see how much fun we had:

Social Studies/Interdisciplinary Learning

Term 3

Scottish Celebration

We started off the year with our whole school Scotland topic.  Each class focused on a different aspect of Scotland with Room 1 learning all about the Bonnie Beasts. We enjoyed researching about all the different wildlife found in Scotland and presented our learning in front of a large audience at the Scottish afternoon.

Wild About Scotland

We are now moving onto our next topic, Katie Morag, and can’t wait to learn all about Katie’s adventures and the Isle of Struay.

Homelinks/Things to consider at home

Homework

  • Children should hand in all homework on a Friday including their homework diary. Parents should sign the diary at the end of each week.
  • Gym Days
    • Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon.
    • Please ensure your child has shorts and a t-shirt in their book bags on gym days. Gym shoes will remain in school. No jewellery should be worn and long hair should be tied back.

    Personal Belongings

    • Please ensure that children’s names are attached to all items of clothing and personal belongings.
    • Children should bring a water bottle to school every day. Water bottles should be named.

    Arts & Crafts

    • The children are involved in a number of arts and crafts activities throughout the week and as you can imagine it can get very messy! It would be helpful if you could send an old painting shirt to school with your child’s name on it.
